N.E.O.S. ... no, not the guy from the Matrix!
The real name is Nature Earth Ocean and Space Thanks to reader Shannan who found this place, which seems to be just the right spot for all of your outdoor goods. Here is what Shannan has to say about NEOS:
"NEOS is referred to as Okinawa's REI. They have a huge assortment and selection of outdoor goods such as biking, camping and hiking gear. The prices are reasonable. I was stoked to find Keen sandals there, as the BX doesn't carry them. My husband found parts he needed for his bicycle, and my kids enjoyed running up and down the stairs."
Hey, any place that doesn't mind kids running wild is awesome in my book. I can't wait to check out this place since I have a significant need for hiking items for when I climb Mt. Fuji next month. NEOS is open from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
How to get there: Head South on Hwy 58 towards Naha. After Futenma, stay in the left lane going down beside the first overpass you come to, NEOS will be the first building on the left corner at the large intersection. It sits with its back to the overpass and parking is right in front of the store. If you go over the overpass, take the first left, and then the first left again to go around the block. You can't miss it, it is a huge building.
Yes. I've been looking for you, Neo<s>. I don't know if you're ready to see what I want to show you, but unfortunately, you and I have run out of time. They're coming for you, Neo<s>, and I don't know what they're going to do. ~Unfortunately, only Matrix fans will appreciate this sign off! (smile)

Oh yes! Space!!!!!! The ultimate outdoors!!!
It cracks me up every time I drive by there.
I find this store okay for items you can't get in the PX. As for everything else the prices are way higher than on base, as always we do have a benefit shopping on base.
Thanks for a nice review.

I went to this place today and thought of it weird that it was closed, since it's always been open on all the other times i've passed by it. Sadly, as i got closer to it, this place did not just look closed or that it might be going through renovation, but that the right part of the building appeared like it was burnt down. i wonder if there's any other NEOS out there or a similar place like it?

Cherry, it did burn, my husband went down a couple Saturdays ago and found out it had burned. The next best place for sports equipment is Sports Depo. There is one out close to Jusco in Awase and one close to Babies R Us in Naha. Sorry, I don't have better directions to either.

My husband and I came across the temporary NEOS location that's on 330 going into Naha. They have a limited selection of bikes and parts now but the staff was SUPER FRIENDLY and helpful nonetheless. I was able to order a bike from them and I'm expecting them in about a week. They are getting ready to re-open their full store again so we will definitely go back for our biking needs :)

Krimp, the directions were kind of hidden between the photos: How to get there: Head South on Hwy 58 towards Naha.

NEOS is a great place to get outdoors equipment if you are in a bind and don't mind paying a wad more money for them. They have a great selection of bikes (ie trek, cannondale, giant, GT, and many other high enders). There are kayaks, trekking equipment. They also carry a handful of mountain hardwear tents.
